Quantico was quiet as everyone seemed to be recovering from the unwinding that they did this weekend. Dr. Spencer Reid, who had just come back from a week long case in Alabama, sat at his desk in the B.A.U. bullpen sorting through the things that had accumulated on his desk.

Most of it seemed to be inter-Bureau memos that everyone got regardless if it affected them or not. The Bureau was notorious for really liking paperwork. He tossed all the irrelevant ones in the trashcan by his desk. The others he threw in several piles on his desk, though he had already memorized most of them. It was both a gift and a curse that he could absorb information so quickly, it helped greatly in cases, but it made him wonder how many memos one could memorize about a word change in a policy before their head exploded.

One of the memos made him toss the whole pile on his desk, and he picked up his office phone. He dialed the number listed on the memo.

“Brant,” a cheerful feminine voice answered after two rings.

Spencer identified himself, and then said, “What is this memo about the lecture on Friday?” He picked up a pencil and begin to absentmindedly tap it on the desk.

The agent apparently hadn’t heard the first thing he said, because she responded. “It’s at 3pm, and it is given by the truly wonderful Dr. Spencer Reid. He is a real genius; I think his I.Q. is 250. You should definitely come if you can; he is just a wonderful speaker.” Brant’s voice remained chipper as she gushed over him.

Spencer forced himself not to say his I.Q. was actually 187, or the fact that the Standford-Binet Scale or the Weschler Adult Scale didn’t really run to 250, but he decided that it would be better to keep his tongue. Spencer arched his eyebrows, dropping the pencils for a minute. “Let me start over, I’m Dr. Reid, and---“

She cut him off before he could finish the statement, and with a loud peal of giggles. She began to talk really fast. “Oh, I love you!!!! What an honor to talk to you Dr. Reid, I am so excited about your lecture. You are one of the best calibers there are of men.”

He tried to interrupt for several minutes, and finally he was able to say angrier than he intended. “Why wasn’t I informed of the lecture or even asked my permission before I was scheduled to speak?” He forced himself to take a deep breath. “I really don’t intend to be rude, but I just want to know how this happened.”

She stopped in her gushing…”Oh…Oh…I am so sorry…I didn’t know…Did you want me to cancel it?” Brant seemed distraught, and on the verge of tears.

Spencer sighed. “No, No… Brant, I didn’t mean to make you upset. I am not sure if I can make it, I may be on a case, but I can try to make it if I am here. I just need some information about the lecture. Do you guys have a flyer for the lecture? “

“Yes, I can have it sent over.”

“Thank you, that way I can prepare what to speak. I’ll hopefully see you on Friday.”

“I’m looking forward to it.”

“Have a nice day, Brant.” Spencer said before hanging up the phone. He felt like slamming his head on his desk that whole call was a bit frustrating. He was honored to be asked to give a lecture, but it wasn’t the first time the Bureau had decided that he was to give a speech without telling him.

J.J., who had gotten up to get a cup of coffee, walked behind him. “That sounded like a fun phone call. What was it about?”

Spencer handed her the memo, without saying anything.

She scanned over it. “I didn’t know you were giving a lecture on Friday, Spence.”

“Neither did I till today.”

J.J. chuckled, even though she could tell he didn’t think it was at all funny. “Hey, at least they gave you more than a one day notice.” She headed back to her desk

Spencer shook his head, and began to finish sorting through his mail.
